Zoran Music's work alternates between abstraction and figuration with a strongly existential slant, informed by the experience of a life marked by the tragedy of Nazi deportation. Music was interned in the Dachau concentration camp at the end of 1944 and was only liberated at the end of the global conflict.
It was in the 1970s that he decided to express the horror of his memories in one of his most famous series, We are not the last, a title that reveals his distrust of human nature and its inability to avoid falling into the trap of war. Thematically, Music allows the inhumanity he experienced firsthand to take shape in piles of lifeless bodies or in the dying called Muselmanner or, in a derogatory sense, Arabs at prayer, forced to their knees by the lethal fatigue of life in the concentration camp. As Music himself explained: Even today, the eyes of the dying accompany me like hundreds of stinging sparks; I lived in a daily landscape of dead and dying people, in apathetic waiting. Stiff and frozen, the dead keep me company. In layers, a row of heads forward, and above a row with legs protruding.
