Dadamaino, pseudonym of Eduarda Emilia Maino, represented a significant source of renewal in Italian art after World War II.
After her early figurative works, Dadamaino decided to break with commonly accepted artistic canons, arriving at an extreme simplification of pictorial composition with her first and famous series of Volumi (Volumes). The compositional reset began to be accompanied by the perforation of the canvases in a continuous investigation of the relationship between surface, light, movement, and the observer's act of perception. As the artist explained: [...] By superimposing colors, materials, and objects, I was complicating the situation more and more. It seemed necessary to remove rather than add; to remove everything that painting meant in all its meanings. So on the clean canvases [...].
