For the autumn session, particular attention has been devoted to one of the categories that has enjoyed steadily growing interest among collectors in both the domestic and international markets: gold coinage.
The selection presented here is not limited to Italian issues, which have long been particularly appreciated and sought after, but extends to a significant range of modern gold coinage from various parts of the world. Gold coins represent a field of particular interest, combining the intrinsic value of the precious metal with the distinctive attributes of numismatics, including rarity, grade, type, historical significance and, particularly in the case of more recent issues, limited mintages.
The latter aspect has assumed increasing importance in the contemporary market. Over time, many issues have experienced a substantial reduction in their original mintages, partly as a result of the melting of specimens for the recovery of their precious-metal content. The consequent decrease in the number of pieces effectively available on the market has contributed to making certain issues increasingly sought after by collectors.
Our auction therefore presents the now increasingly difficult-to-find Italian 50,000- and 100,000-lire gold issues (Lots 109–116), alongside a broad selection of international gold coinage. Together, these offerings form a journey through modern gold coinage, bringing together rarity, precious metal and collectible appeal in a selection of particular distinction.
